Diagnodent
We have acquired a new diagnostic instrument called the
Diagnodent
Laser Cavity Scanner, which uses laser fluorescence to detect
hidden decay beneath the enamel surface of your teeth. Diagnodent is a major breakthrough that allows Dr. Gouins and his team to detect tooth decay that
x-rays cannot see. We can now locate hidden decay in it's earliest stage, and
with treatment stop the spread of the disease before it destroys the tooth from
within.
One of our biggest
challenges is detecting decay when it is just beginning and has penetrated the
hard outer enamel of a tooth. Unfortunately, decay at this stage may escape
clinical and radiographic detection methods. However, using the
Diagnodent
laser wand in conjunction with clinical observation and digital
images allows us to catch decay in its early stages, so any needed fillings are
kept small and conservative. Conversely, the Diagnodent can show if there is, in fact, no decay in a tooth we might have
suspected after only a visual inspection. Our hygienists are also able to use
the wand to detect calculus deposits in periodontal pockets. When we use the
laser wand on your tooth’s surface, you will feel nothing, hear only a slight
tone, and be able to see a visual display that quantifies whether decay or
calculus is present after the scan.
